The Basics of Poker

In poker, bluffing and misdirection are key elements of the game. Although there is some controversy about the origins of this card game, it is thought to have originated in the 17th century in France. In fact, the word poker derives from this game. Regardless of its exact origins, the game has many similarities to other games, including bridge and rummy. As a result, many people confuse the two games.

Like many card games, poker is played with chips, usually in denominations of ten, twenty, or thirty. The lowest value of a chip is the white, and each of the four colors represents a different amount of money. Normally, players “buy in” by purchasing chips, with each color representing one unit of money. The more chips a player buys, the more they are able to bet. In poker, each player plays with the same amount of chips and is known as an active player.

In fixed-limit games, the bets are pre-determined and cannot be changed during a round. In such games, the bets are gathered into a central pot at the end of each round. In other types of poker, the bets from all players are collected into this pot. The game of poker is as simple as building a house. You need to set the foundation first. Once you have laid the frame, the rest is easy.
