What is a Slot?

A slot is a rectangular area in ice or field hockey that extends toward the blue line. The word has Latin roots and comes from the Latin verb “sleutanus” (to push). It is cognate with the German word “Schloss.” It has several meanings. Some of them are: a job opening, an assignment, or a flying display. In field hockey, a slot is an interior opening in a copy desk. A chief copy editor fills a slot. In ice hockey, a slot is the fourth position in a flying display. The air-traffic authority authorizes a plane’s landing or takeoff by granting a landing slot.

A slot is an opening or hole, usually narrow, that is used to receive or place things. An airplane uses slots along the leading edge to improve airflow. A SLOT is often a guy or girl who loves electronic gadgets and cannot imagine life without them. An example of an electronic gadget is a telephone. A SLOT needs a coin to call a phone number. Unlike a traditional telephone, a slot isn’t connected to a phone number, so it can be a mobile device.

A slot is a binary relation between two objects. Each value in a slot V represents the assertion that a particular relation holds. For example, a frame of favorite food may contain values such as “Potato-Chips” or ”string ice cream. Obviously, this is a good thing. But a SLOT is also a bad thing. And a SLOT is a person who abuses a slot, so it’s always best to be careful with it.
