There are many variants of the game, which can be played with any number of players. However, an ideal number of players is six to eight. To prevent players from overbearing themselves, the betting limits are typically fixed at the start of the game.

When the cards are dealt, players have the option of betting, raising, or folding. Some games require that all players make a bet before being dealt their cards. Others allow players to shuffle their own cards.

Other variants of the game include a single raised pot, which is a pot that has only one bet made by a player. The pot can be won if a player makes a bet that no other player calls.
