The Basics of Poker

Poker

Depending on the game you play, you may have the winning hand when all the cards are dealt. This is known as the pot-o-gold system. The winner is the player with the highest hand. In most cases, the high-card hand will win. The best hands are those that consist of two or more pairs of cards. However, if you are not good at poker, you can still lose the pot by not bluffing!

This game has a colorful history and comes from a number of earlier games. Interestingly, it is believed that the word “poker” comes from a Mississippi riverboat where a group of people played a cheating game with twenty or more cards. The players “buy in” by purchasing chips equal to the total of the previous player’s contribution. This player is the active player. The players with the lowest hands win the pot.

Each player buys chips for each round of the game. These chips are numbered and are worth different amounts. The lowest-value chip is called a “white chip,” and the highest-valued chip is a red one. There are also blue and green chips, which are each worth ten, twenty, or thirty whites. In a poker game, the players purchase chips with the same value and are called “buy-ins.”
