Poker is a card game in which players place bets on the outcome of their hand. There are a number of variant games, but all share the same basic rules. Each player is dealt five cards, and the highest ranking hand wins the pot. Players may fold at any time before the final betting round.
The game is typically played with two to 14 players. The first step in playing is to “ante” (the amount varies by game; our games require a nickel). The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals them one at a time, beginning with the player to their left. Depending on the variant of poker, some cards are dealt face up while others remain face down. The players then begin placing bets into a central pot. A player can win the pot by having the highest hand, or by making a bet that no other players call.
In most cases, the best poker hands include five cards in sequence and of the same suit, but there are other exceptions. A high card hand is also considered a good hand, and it beats all other hands except for a straight flush. When more than one player has a high card hand, the winner is determined at a showdown, where the players reveal their hidden cards and evaluate their respective hands. The highest-ranking hand wins the pot. In a tie, the winner is determined by a process of elimination.
